Now that the State budget has been finalized, we’re once again gearing up to fight the City’s proposed $12 million cut to DYCD-funded adult literacy programs. Similar to last year, we’re holding rallies in each borough for a month to show that #LiteracyLiftsNYC!

Queens Borough Hall: 120-55 Queens Blvd, Kew Gardens, NY 11424

  • Staten Island - Wednesday, May 1, 10:30

Action Alert: Rally at City Hall Park June 6th, 2018

5/23/2018

Join us  Wednesday, June 6th at 10:00 am (updated 6/5/18) on the Broadway side of City Hall Park for our last big push to get $12 million restored for Adult Education in the New York City Budget.

Politico has revealed that because the City Council Speaker is prioritizing the fair fares campaign, a lot of pressure is being put on all other Council priorities and initiatives. It is important that we are loudly and visibly calling for adult literacy funding to be renewed in the final budget deal.

We will need speakers, quotes, volunteers, outreach to City Council Members, press engagement, etc. — essentially everything we did for the borough rallies but on a larger scale.

Queens #LiteracyLiftsNYC Rally April 10, 2018

Nice work NYCCAL! Today we had a successful kick off to our adult literacy tour of the boroughs. Participating in this morning’s rally in Queens were: Chinese American Planning Council, La Guardia CIET, Queens Community House, Make the Road New York, Sunnyside Community Services, the YMCA, and Jacob Riis Neighborhood Settlement. With well over 100 students and supporters in attendance, and five media outlets on hand, including NY1, this was a strong start to our efforts to raise the profile of the issue for the Mayor and City Council.

In fact, just this afternoon the City Council released their response to the Mayor’s Preliminary Budget, and in it they called for the Mayor to baseline his portion ($6m) of the $12m investment from FY2018. You can view their full response here.  As an FYI, the Council also called for a new $3m citywide citizenship fund to be administered by MOIA. The funding would be used to support citizenship application fees for  households with limited incomes, as well as provide financial literacy classes.

A roundup of some of the press we received for our rally in Queens this week: Queens Chronicle, NTD TV, China Press, Times Ledger, & World Journal.

NYCCAL is sending at least one bus from New York City to Albany on March 5.  The bus will be leaving NYC at or before 8 am and returning by 7 pm.  To learn more about getting a seat on the bus and/or attending the rally, please contact
